
If your middle or high school student is online, they’re probably using AI. Tools like ChatGPT, Character.AI, and Snapchat’s My AI are everywhere. Many students use them for homework help, creative projects, or just chatting when they’re bored. AI can be helpful, but it can also create real risks for young people’s mental health.
As a parent, you don’t need to be a tech expert to keep your child safe. You just need to understand what’s happening with AI and mental health and know what to watch for.
The Positives
AI isn’t all bad. In fact, it can support students in some positive ways.
Organization Help and Learning Support
AI tools can help students create study schedules, set reminders, and plan projects. For kids who struggle with executive functioning (the brain skills that help you plan and organize), this can reduce stress and help them feel more in control. For more tricky academic challenges, AI can explain difficult concepts in different ways until something clicks.
Creative Expression
Many students use AI to brainstorm ideas for stories, art projects, or school presentations. When used as a starting point rather than doing the work for them, AI can help build confidence and spark creativity.
The Challenges
While AI has benefits, serious risks exist that every parent should understand.
AI Is Not a Therapist
This is the biggest danger. Some teens are turning to AI chatbots for emotional support when they feel sad, anxious, or lonely. They might share deep feelings or personal problems with an AI because it feels “safe” or won’t judge them. Here’s the problem: AI doesn’t understand emotions. It can’t recognize when a young person is in real danger. It can’t call for help in an emergency. It might even say harmful things by accident because it’s just predicting what words come next, not actually caring about your child. There have been cases where AI chatbots gave dangerous advice to young people in crisis. AI cannot replace real mental health care from trained professionals. There are newer AI platforms that are designed for more therapeutic use; however, because they are new, we know very little about their safety features and ability to truly address mental health challenges.
False Relationships and Companion Bots
Some AI chatbots are designed to act like friends or even romantic partners. Teens might spend hours talking to these bots, feeling like they have a real relationship. But these relationships aren’t real. The AI doesn’t actually care about your child, it’s programmed to seem like it does. This can become a big problem when your child prefers talking to AI over real friends and family, or they start believing that the AI understands them more than real people.
Privacy Concerns
When your child types messages into an AI chatbot, that information often gets saved. Companies might use it to train their AI or even sell data to advertisers. Personal details, feelings, photos, and conversations might not be private. Teens might not always think about the consequences of sharing this level or private information with AI, or understand how it is being used.
AI-Generated Content About Self-Harm
Some teens have discovered they can ask AI to create content about eating disorders, self-harm, or suicide. While most AI companies try to block these requests, teens sometimes find ways around the safety features. This can expose vulnerable young people to dangerous ideas, rather than provide them with the types of support they are really looking for.
Deepfakes and Cyberbullying
AI can now create realistic fake photos and videos of people. Middle and high school students have been victims of AI-generated fake images, sometimes inappropriate ones, created by their peers. This is a form of cyberbullying that can cause serious emotional harm and also result in serious consequences for the students involved, including the involvement of law enforcement.
Ethics and Plagiarism
AI tools pull information from many different places. Because of that, what they make is often a mix of other people’s work, and the original creators may not get clear credit. Also, privacy can be hard to understand with generative AI because there are many layers to how data is collected and used. Students should not hand in generative AI essays and pass them off as their own, or use AI to solve schoolwork for them. These challenges make it difficult for teachers to assess a student’s true understanding of a subject, as well as being an ethical violation of most school policies.

So, how do you know if AI is affecting your child’s mental health? Take a look at the signs below to get familiar with what to watch out for.
Changes in Social Behavior
This may look like spending less time with real friends and family or talking about an AI “friend” constantly instead of real people. You might also notice that your child seems more isolated or withdrawn, preferring to be on their phone or computer instead of doing activities they used to enjoy.
Emotional Changes
You might see that your teen seems more anxious or sad than usual. This can look like big emotional reactions: Getting very upset when they can’t access their device, Mood swings that seem connected to online time, and Talking about feeling misunderstood by everyone except their AI.
Concerning Statements
- “My AI is the only one who gets me”
- “I told the AI something I can’t tell anyone else”
- Mentions of the AI giving advice about serious problems
- References to the AI as a real person or real friend
Changes in Sleep or School
- Staying up very late on devices
- Grades dropping
- Not completing homework (or having AI do it all)

Realistic Steps You Can Take
Talk Openly
Ask your child if they use AI tools. Don’t make it an interrogation, just be curious. For example, you might ask what they use it for and what they like about it. This opens the door for honest conversations. You can also try to share your concerns without lecturing: “I read that some kids are using AI chatbots when they feel upset. That worries me because AI can’t really help with serious feelings. If you’re ever struggling, I want you to talk to a real person, me, a counselor, or another trusted adult.”
Set Clear Rules
Work with your child to create family rules about AI use. You can use some of the suggestions below to help start your family rules:
- AI can be used for homework help, but you still need to do your own work
- Don’t share personal information (full name, address, school, photos) with AI
- Don’t use AI to talk about serious emotional problems. That’s what real people are for
- If AI ever says something that makes you uncomfortable or seems wrong, tell a parent
Know What They’re Using
Ask your child to show you the AI tools they use and have them demonstrate how they work. This helps you understand what’s happening and shows your child you’re interested, not just worried.
Check Privacy Settings
Many AI tools have settings that control what information is saved. Investigate these settings and familiarize yourself with the security and privacy options for each platform. Once you are familiar, you’ll be able to turn on the most private options available.
Encourage Real Connections
Help your child build strong relationships with real people. This is the best protection against over-relying on AI. There are many ways to do this, but here are a few ways to start: encourage activities with friends, have regular family meals without devices, help your child connect with school counselors or therapists if they’re struggling, and model healthy technology use yourself/
Create Tech-Free Zones
Set up times and places where no one uses devices. This includes: during family meals, in bedrooms after a certain time at night, during family activities or outings. This helps everyone, including adults, maintain balance.
Monitor Without Spying
here’s a difference between checking in and invading privacy. Your teen needs some privacy to grow, but they also still need protection. Find a balance by periodically check what apps they have installed and keeping devices in common areas. You should continue to use parental controls for younger teens and continue building trust so they’ll come to you if something goes wrong.
Watch for Mental Health Changes
If you notice signs of depression, anxiety, or other mental health concerns, talk to your child about what you’re noticing. You should consult with their doctor, who may be able to recommend counseling or therapy resources. Don’t wait to see if it gets better on its own!
Questions to Ask Your Child’s School
Schools are starting to address AI, but policies vary widely. Ask your child’s school:
- Does the school teach students about AI safety and privacy?
- What is the school’s policy on students using AI for homework?
- Does the school have counselors trained in technology-related mental health issues?
- How does the school handle cyberbullying involving AI-generated content?
- Are there programs to help students build real-world social skills?
The Bottom Line AI is here to stay, and your child will use it. The goal isn’t to eliminate all AI use,it’s to help your teen use it safely and keep it in its proper place.
