FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Centervention® Receives Grant from NewSchools Venture Fund and Joins Cohort to Support an Expanded Definition of Student Success

Durham, North Carolina, May 16, 2019 — Centervention is one of 11 ed tech companies awarded funding through the NewSchools Ignite Expanded Definition of Student Success Challenge. Each cohort member is committed to developing products designed to build a strong academic foundation by enhancing social-emotional learning and supporting the development of nurturing school and classroom environments. In addition to the funding, NewSchools will provide management assistance and create a community of practice for the cohort members.

“We know that 4.3 million children across the United States start Kindergarten every year, but only 50% of these children make a smooth transition and nearly 20% experience serious difficulties.  And children from vulnerable, underserved social niches are particularly likely to be less ready for school,” said Tim Huntley, CEO at Centervention. “We are grateful for the support from NewSchool Venture Fund to advance our mission to help all children succeed in the classroom and in life, and with this additional funding, we will work to make our programs more accessible to educators and parents.”

“We believe ed tech tools hold great promise in this area,” said Tonika Cheek Clayton, Managing Partner at NewSchools Venture Fund. “They have the potential to increase equity and improve academic outcomes by supporting the development of social-emotional competencies as well as improvements in school culture and climate. That’s why NewSchools Ignite is proud to invest in Centervention to develop engaging tools to support an expanded definition of student success.”
